You open your AirPods case next to your iPhone.
Nothing happens.
No animation.
No connection.
Maybe the AirPods appear under Bluetooth but say:

Before resetting the AirPods—or your iPhone—figure out which problem you actually have.

Put both AirPods into their case.
Make sure they're seated correctly.
Then close the lid.
Wait about 15 seconds.
Open it again near the iPhone.

If one AirPod isn't making proper contact inside the case, you may think you have a Bluetooth problem when the actual problem is charging or detection.
3. Check the AirPods Battery

You put the AirPods in.
Your iPhone doesn't seem to use them.
Meanwhile your nearby iPad or Mac has grabbed the connection.

13. Reset the AirPods
A full AirPods reset should come after simpler troubleshooting.
And again, the reset procedure depends on the model.
Apple's current instructions first have you put the AirPods in their case, close the lid, and wait 30 seconds. If they're still paired to the iPhone, forget them from Bluetooth before continuing.
